What Does it take to be an Airline Pilot? The "Search for Questions" bar; it has a purpose, no?
Those of us that take a few minutes a day here to scratch out a few Q’s and A’s to maybe help some youngster, or, more likely, help ourselves, really don’t mind giving repetitive answers.
But folks, everything has a limit.
I’ve been playing with Yahoo Answers for maybe 2 years and off the top of my head, I must have come across this question 730 times: "What Does it Take to be an Airline Pilot?"
Now, I’ll repeat myself: If a youngster really needs an answer to this qustion, I’ll tell him/her over and over again till my breath leaves me…as I’m sure all you active and ex pilots out there would.
BUT……the fly in the ointment here is the word "really" in my last statement.
It happened again today.
So….I said to myself: "Let me give this here "Search for Qustions" bar a go and see what happens.
I typed in: "What does it take to be an airline pilot" and clicked: "SEARCH"
I cut and pasted the following response:

Anybody see the "What does it take to be an Airline Pilot" question there?
Look folks, if you’re happy to keep pecking out the same pap week after month after year, I’ll be happy too….nothing’s more appealing than answering some young ‘un with his/her head in the clouds…..but, mercy…..have we passed the point of being unreasonable here?
Somebody’s dropping the ball in the Front Office of Yahoo Answers.
Maybe they could pull somebody off Dirty Word Patrol or Morality and Censorship and ship him over to Quality Control.
Y’all have a nice day.
Fact of life is that most people (especially younger ones it seems) don’t even bother to use the search function.
This site is nowhere near unique in that, the same can be seen on any forum. A million times is the same homework question asked, and the same answer given (usually along the lines of "use the search function, this question has been answered a million times before"
Of course some questions can be repeated over time without warranting such a response, like the "what is the best digital camera" as new models appear constantly and old ones go out of production, making old answers irrelevant in months (of course without being quite specific as to the requirements for that camera, the question simply can’t be answered at all, which is why a stock answer to indicate that is often in place for them).
What is comes down to is simply that a lot of people want to get instant gratification without putting in any of their own effort whatsoever, and submitting a new question is a lot easier than searching the archives for existing answers to that question.
There’s almost certainly no way that’ll ever change in any significant way.

You have to be healthy, so you won’t have a heart attack while flying the plane, and know how to fly it of course.

Same thing happening in Cameras. The question "What is the best digital camera?" or something to the tune of that pops up more than once a day. There has to be a better way than just Search. Most mortals believe their problem is unique. Must we start banning certain questions already?

Maybe there is a limit to the number of characters in the search string?
By the way, the question "Is the world going to end in 2012?" gets asked about 20 times a day in Astronomy and Space!

I feel your pain, but I think most people might realize that the question has been asked, but are perhaps hoping if they ask they will receive a better answer. Who knows?

Yeah, dirty word patrol. I answered a mechanical question and told the asker to make sure not to put brake cylinder parts together c/o/c/k/e/y/e/d and my advice turned into ********. Geez, dirty words folks, the word refers to the funny way a rooster’s eye looks, and if the mechanical parts look that same way you are s/c/r/e/w/e/d. (Let’s see if I’ve found a way around "dirty" words.)
Now I begin to see the reason I’ve had to answer some questions so often. Perhaps there’s a forum where we ought to be discussing these issues? I’ve not found one, but haven’t really looked, either.
Did you notice that some folks answer without reading? One of the answerers above took your question to be you asking about how to become an airline pilot, and another uttered some nonsense, I think about a movie.
I think the best way to find a YA question is to use G/o/o/g/l/e. (Is that a dirty word at Yahoo?)
